She is a founding member of the Colorado Repertory Singers, and likes to cook and bake, to read — both in English and Italian, and to spend time strolling in the woods of colorful Colorado. She travels often to her native country, owns the most languid cat in the state, and enjoys irregular visits to her home by various examples of the local Colorado wildlife.

Vice President, Communications: Karen Early

Karen grew up in a small logging town in northern Canada where choral music was an anomaly. She’s delighted to find music she can really set her teeth into with CRS. She has accompanied and sung in church choirs wherever she’s lived: BC, Idaho, Quebec, Israel, Utah, New York, Oklahoma, England, and now sunny Colorado. Traveling, family history, sewing, gardening and cub scouting are some of her hobbies, but her first love remains music. Karen completed a degree in English (with a minor in music) and is amazed to find herself still doing homework — helping four young children complete assignments. She is the frazzled but proud mom of three boys and a daughter, ages eight to fourteen.

She is now the mother of six children and has tried to instill a love of music in each of them. She holds a degree in Business Education from Utah State University. She and her husband moved to Colorado after graduation in 1984 just weeks before the birth of their first child making all of their children native Coloradans. She taught at Barnes Business College for several years and is currently working for Thorne Tax Consulting. Merlene enjoys spending time reading, volunteering, enjoying her family, and singing with the Colorado Repertory Singers.

She received the “Best Supporting Actress” award and “Best Performance in a Musical” for the role of Bianca in a community theatre production of Kiss Me Kate. In spite of a doctoral degree in engineering, David has maintained a love for singing over the years, participating in large and small choral organizations everywhere he has lived. One of David’s favorite experiences was singing under Mack Wilberg, a current Mormon Tabernacle Choir director, for 6 years in BYU Men’s Chorus. David travels extensively as a sales engineer for IBM and welcomes weekly CRS rehearsals as quality “date nights” with his wife! David is pleased to join his wife this year on the board in supporting quality choral music in the community.
